10 things you absolutely must do in London

We just got back on California time a couple days ago, and my mind is still reeling from our 10 day trip to London. The trip itself was a check off my bucket list, filled with so many others like visiting Buckingham Palace and having a proper afternoon tea. I’d been wanting to visit England for as long as I could remember, so getting the opportunity to go was a mind-blowing experience. Not to mention combining it with my Harry Potter fandom! More on that soon. Now, I just can’t wait to go back.

Although we had planned out most of our trip based on tireless research, we didn’t truly get a feel for everything the city had to offer until we were there, traversing its streets and cobbled alleyways. Here’s what we came away with as 10 things you absolutely must do on your first trip to London (Or next trip. No judgement here!).

London Underground

Take the Tube everywhere

And I mean everywhere. It’s incredible how interconnected this city is. The only times we took an Uber were between our two hotels (admittedly, we could have walked that) and from our hotel to the airport (because we didn’t feel like train hopping with four suitcases, though we proved it was possible on the way in!). Being from Los Angeles, I marveled at the idea that rush hour meant just a ton more people on the Underground. The first time I giddily said that to Sohrab, we were squeezed in a corner against the door on an overly crowded train, and he only responded, “Who are you?” with a grin. I’m not usually one for crowds. Maybe I’m just sick of Los Angeles traffic.

No matter where we wanted to go, we were able to use our Oyster card to get there. And, as complicated as the system looks at first, all of the signs, announcements, and maps make it very easy to follow and get used to. So, don’t bother renting a car! Just fill up your Oyster or use contactless payment (like Apple Pay) to take the Underground or a double decker bus to that pub you’ve been eyeing. But don’t forget to “mind the gap!”

Afternoon tea at The Park Room

Have afternoon tea

Tube station: Marble Arch
Address: 86-90 Park Lane London W1K 7TN

You’ve heard how seriously afternoon tea is taken in the UK, right? I’ll let you in on a little secret – it’s even more serious than that! Sohrab and I dressed up a bit and finished off our trip with a proper afternoon tea at The Park Room at The Grosvenor House on our last full day, and we walked, nay, rolled, out of there really impressed. We spent the entirety of 2.5 hours sipping at our loose leaf tea and devouring trays of finger foods. But that was nothing! Apparently, the ladies at the table next to us had spent a good 4 hours there. From the seemingly endless array of finger sandwiches (which I tried for the first time and loved!*) to delightful scones and desserts, it was a tasty way to spend an afternoon. Pro tip: go hungry, and don’t be afraid to try some milk in your tea!

*Curse my picky appetite. I am (slightly) cured.

London Eye

Wander the streets of Westminster

Tube station: Westminster

This checks a lot of boxes. Westminster Abbey, Big Ben (currently under construction), Parliament, the London Eye, the Churchill War Rooms… if you’re into British history, this is your stop. My one qualm with the city of London? You’ll be hard pressed to find a trash can. Or recycling bin. Oh, they exist! But they are unicorns. Bear this in mind as you explore.

The lions at Trafalgar Square

Visit Trafalgar Square

Tube station: Charing Cross
Address: Trafalgar Square London WC2N

Blame this on Grey and Brady. When we heard two of our favorite podcasters rave about the lions at Trafalgar Square, we knew we had to make the pilgrimage at some point during our trip to London. Guys, they were right. This square has such a cool vibe. Families everywhere. Epic lion statues. Access to The National Gallery.

This grand square is soaked in historical details but used as an everyday space. It felt like a perfect representation of London – historical places are respected, of course, but used like they always were. Not everything old needs to be encased in bubble wrap. Some of my favorite moments were walking around and seeing old architecture respected yet repurposed.

Trafalgar Square is clearly the park Londoners visit to enjoy any amount of sunshine they can find. Just… don’t mind those guys dressed like Pikachu or Yoda.

Borough Market

Visit Borough Market

Tube station: London Bridge
Address: 8 Southwark Street London SE1 1TL

This farmer’s market sits where many markets like it have for the past 1,000 years. Featuring every kind of delicious food you can imagine, this one’s worth a wander. Chocolate cafe? Check. Handmade artisan bread? Check. Fresh produce as far as the eye can see? Check check. The space is steeped in history, and is perfect to stumble upon when you’re feeling a bit peckish. Oh, and here’s an extra bonus: there’s trash cans.

Tower of London

Visit the Tower of London

Tube station: Tower Hill
Address: London EC3N

Talk about history. This 1,000 year old castle has stood on the banks of the Thames for generations of war, peace, and everything in between. Not to mention it’s served as a castle, a prison, a stronghold, and now a museum in its career. Go inside and explore, or just stay outside by the river and bask in the beauty. If you’re looking for a tasty bite while visiting, head over to the unique Coppa Club. If you’re up for a wait, you can even dine in one of the funky igloos outside with a direct view of the Tower Bridge!

St. Paul's Cathedral

Visit St. Paul’s Cathedral

Tube station: St. Paul’s
Address: St Paul’s Churchyard London EC4M 8AD

Another architectural marvel made it to the list. But of course! This is one of those places that you just don’t realize how gigantic it is until you’re standing in its shadow. Even if you don’t step inside, you can spend lots of time wandering the gardens and learning about the statues and plants. There are plenty of picturesque spots for you to stop and relax, take a photo, or drink a coffee. Or, if it’s raining, hide in a bright red telephone booth!

Another example of history being used? There are church services here every week! If nothing else, stop here for some major building inspo.

PS – The Underground station lets you out in clear view of the cathedral, so you’ll know immediately that you’re in the right place.

Changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace

Watch the changing of the guard at Buckingham Palace

Tube station: Green Park or Victoria
Address: London SW1A 1AA

You’re gonna want to get there early, because the good spots fill up quick (and there aren’t many). The closer to the center, the better, so you can see the action in all its glory. Push up against the gates so you’re near the front, and get ready for the show! This was a bucket list item for us, and if you’re having your doubts, I’d say it’s worth seeing once. You can decide from there if it bears repeating. Go for the up close and personal view of Buckingham Palace! Maybe you’ll catch a glimpse of the Queen?

Pro tip: keep an eye on the Guard’s Twitter account, since the ceremony can be cancelled as late as 15 minutes beforehand due to weather!

Piccadilly Circus

Visit Piccadilly Circus

Tube station: Piccadilly Circus
Address: 13 Coventry Street London W1D 7DH

If you’re into glitz and glamour, this is where it’s at. Think of this as London’s version of Times Square. The shopping might only be rivaled by the Knightsbridge area (where Harrod’s is!). Take a while to explore the shops and beautiful streets – not too far away from Covent Garden and even closer to the lions at Trafalgar Square. We were entranced – we stopped there twice on our trip!

Covent Garden

Visit Covent Garden

Tube station: Covent Garden
Address: No. 1-7 The Piazza London WC2E 8HB

As soon as you step out of the Underground, you’ll hear vibrant music calling you to the bustling streets of Covent Garden. Lined with museums and the Royal Opera House, this area is alive with culture, shopping, and plenty of food. Not to mention one of the most epic Apple stores I’ve ever set foot in! The perfect spot to catch a live performance. We came across a singer that sounded almost exactly like Bono!

I’ll be honest with you – I could go on and on about what to do in London. There are so many places that are still on our list! We can’t wait to return to check more off. What’s on your London bucket list? Let me know in the comments!
