What is it about lists that make our hearts flutter? Why do people bullet journal? Why do I find small, crumpled up pieces of paper filled with scribbles all around my office?
The act of writing something down helps us to compartmentalize the mess that is our minds. Even the most organized brain could use some offloading — therein lies the draw of a list.
Whether it’s organization, offloading, or the simple sharing of information (hello, shared reminders on iOS!), the purpose of a list is to make our lives easier, and let us focus on the good stuff instead of trying to remember what that good stuff is.
But what good is a list that isn’t organized itself? Those crumpled up pieces of paper in my office are simply adding to the chaos. Sometimes I can’t even find the list I was referencing!
If you’re like me, you would benefit from a central location to store your thoughts and to-dos. And if you’re even more like me, keeping it on your phone just doesn’t appeal to your pen and paper loving sensibilities. That’s why I journal and, when I can’t take the whole book with me, keep a few little to do lists in my purse. They’re cute, portable, and ready to go wherever you need them.
Productivity looks different for everyone. Workflows and daily breakdowns are unique. But each person’s productivity relies upon the universal need for focus and direction — for mine, I say: thank goodness for lists.
